经常误用的词和词组（10）
Like.
不要把该词作连词as使用。Like是介词，支配名词和代词；在短语和从句前使用as。例如：
We spent the evening like in the old days.
We spent the evening as in the old days.
（我们象以往那样度过了那个夜晚。）
Chloe smells good，like a pretty girl should.
Chloe smells good，as a pretty girl should.
（克洛绮身上散发出漂亮姑娘该有的那种香味。）
对于学生来说，有关like的最有用的知识也许是：经过仔细校订的出版物都认为like用在短语和从句之前是个显而易见的错误。
Line. Along these lines.
Line表示“手续、行为、思考等的过程”这样的意思是容许的，但是已用得过滥了，尤其是在along these lines这个短语中。因此，致力于创新的作者最好摒弃这个词。例如：
Mr.B.also spoke along the same lines.
Mr.B.also spoke to the same effect.
（B先生说的也是同样的意思。）
He is studying along the line of French literature.
He is studying French literature.
（他正在研究法国文学）
Literal. Literally.
这两个词经常错误地用以支持夸张的言语或极端的比喻。例如：
a literal flood of abuse
（确确实实的一阵辱骂）
a flood of abuse
（一阵辱骂）
literally dead with fatigue
（简直疲劳得要命）
almost dead with fatigue（dead tired）（疲劳不堪）
Loan.
这是一个名词。动词宁愿选用lend（把……借给）例如：
Lend me your ears.
请听我讲。
the loan of your ears.
倾听
Meaningful.
该词含义贫乏。应另选其他形容词或采用别的措辞加以表达。例如：
His was a meaningful contribution.
（他作出的贡献是富有意义的。
His contribution counted heavily.
（他作出的贡献具有重大的意义。）
We are instituting many meaningful changes in the curriculum.
（我们正在对学校设置的全部课程作味深长的改变。）
We are improving the cuuriculum in many ways.
（我们正在从许多方面对学校的全部课程加
意以改进。）
Most.
该词在正式的书面语中不可用来代替almost（几乎）。例如：
most everybody
almost everybody
（儿乎每个人）
most all the time
almost all the time
（差不多一直）
