经常误用的词和词组（16）
Try.
Try后接不定式。例如：
try to mend it
尽力把它修好
不要说try and mend it
专修语言的学生会争辩说try and..的用法已经获得公认，并变成习语。情况确是这样。这种说法比较随便，也可以接受。但try to.…更为精确，所以当你写正式的文章时，尽量用try to…。
Type.
它不是kind of的同义词。下面左栏的例子是常见的粗俗说法。
that type employce
that kind of employee
（那种雇员）
small，home-type hotels
small，homelike hotels
（小型的家庭式旅馆）
a new type plane
a plane of a new design（new kind）
（一种新式飞机）
Unique.
该词意为“独一无二”，因此不可能有程度的差别。例如：
It was the most unique egg beater on the market.
（那是市场上最独
特的打蛋器。）
It was a unique egg
beater.
（这是一种独特的打
蛋器。）
The balancing act was very unique.
（这种平衡动作是
十分无可匹敌的。）
The balancing act was unique.
（这种平衡动作是无
可匹敌的。）
Of all the spiders，the one that lives in a bubble under water is the most unique.
（在所有的蜘蛛中，生活在水下气泡中的那一种最罕见。）
Among spiders，the one that lives in a bubble under water is unique.
.（在蜘蛛中，生活在水
下气泡中的那一种是罕
见的。）
左栏的句子是错的。
Verbal.
该词有时指“逐字的，照字面的”。
在这个意思上，它可能指某种书面表达。
Oral（源自拉丁文os，“嘴”）把词义限制在口头表达。oral agreement（口头同意或协定）比 verbal agreement 意思更精确。
Very.
尽量少用该词。需要强调时。使用本身意义较强的词语。
While.
避免把这个词不加区别地与and（和），but（但是）和although（虽然）混用。许多作者经常把它用作and或but的替换词，可能是要换用一下连词，可能是对这两个连词中哪个更合适些没有把握。在这种情况下，最好用一个分号来代替while例如：
The office and salesrooms are on the ground floor，while the rest of the building is used for manufacturing.
（办公室和销售处
在底楼，而大楼的其
余几层则是生产车间。）
The office and salesrooms are on the ground floor；the rest of the building is used for manufacturing.
（办公室和销售处在
底楼；大楼的其余几层
是生产车间。）
在句子中把while 用作although的等价词是容许的，但在意义上不能含糊或荒谬。例如：
While I admire his energy，I wish it were employed in a better cause.
我钦佩他的精力，但愿他把精力用在更好的事业上。
这样的写法完全正确，
由下面的释义佐证：
I admire his energy；at the same time，I wish it were employed in a better cause.
我钦佩他的精力；然而我愿他把精力用在更好的事业上。
试比较：
While the temperature reaches 90 or 95 degrees in the daytime，the nights are often chilly.
在白天的温度达到90°或95°的同时，夜里常常很冷。
下面的释义表明为什么while在这个句子里用得不正确：
The temperature reaches 90 or 95 degrees in the daytime；at the same time the nights are often chilly.
白天的温度达到90°或95°与此同时夜里常常很冷。
一般说来，作者还是严格按照while的原义
“在……的时间内”（during the time that）使用为好。
