经常误用的词和词组（8）
Hopefully.
这个副词曾一度显示出很强的生命力，意指“有希望地”，但已经被曲解了。该词现在广泛地用来表示“我希望”或“希望……”的意思。
这种用法不仅是错误的，而且显得无知。例如：
Hopefully I’ll leave on the noon plane.
这句话简直是胡说八道。你是说你将怀着希望的心情乘中午的班机启程，还是说你希望你将乘中午的班机动身？不管你想表达哪一种意思，你都没有把意思说清楚。虽然这个词获得了自由浮动的新意，很多人对此可能感到满意，甚至认为有用，但有很多人认为不合适，不愿意看到词义变得模糊或遭到侵蚀，尤其是侵蚀到模棱两可、平淡无味、不知所云的程度。
However.
表达“然而”（nevertheless）的意思时，句首不要用however。该词在句中时，通常使句子显得文从字顺。例如：
The roads were almost impassable.However，we at last succeeded in reaching camp.
The roads were almost impassable.At last，however，we succeeded in reaching camp.
（那些道路几乎不可通行。然而，我们最终成功地到达营地。）
However
位于句首时，意为“不管用什么方法”或“无论达到什么程度”。例如：
However you advise him，he will probably do as he thinks best.
不管你怎样劝他，他可能会按自己认为最好的方法去做。
However discouraging the prospect，he never lost heart.
无论前景多么渺茫，他从不灰心气馁。
Imply. Infer
这两个词不能通用。imply指暗示的、但没有表述出来的意思；infer则指根据手头的证据推断出来的意思。例如：
Farming implies early rising.
种田意味着要早起。
Since he was a farmer，we inferred that he got up early.
既然他是农民，我们就可推知他起身很早。
Importantly.
用其他说法表示以回避这个词。例如：
More importantly，he paid for the damages.
What’s more，he paid for the damages.
（而且，他还赔偿了损失。）
With the breeze freshening，he altered course to pass inside the island.More importantly， as things turned out， he tucked in a reef.

（由于风势增强，他改变了驶入岛屿的航程，
不仅如此，后来他还收缩了航帆。）
In regard to.
该短语常误写成in regards to。但as regards（关于）这个形式是正确的，和in regard to同义。
In the last analysis.
这是一个含意贫乏的词组。
Inside of. Inside.
用作状语，表示“少于”意思时，inside后随of。表示其它的意思时，inside后面不必使用of。例如：
Inside of five minutes I’ll be inside the bank.
五分钟之内我就回到银行里来。
Insightful.
该词表示“perceptive”（感觉灵敏的，有洞察力的）意思时，是一个可疑的、言过其实的词。因此，仅当表示异常敏锐的洞察力时，才使用该词。一般来说，该词能使平凡的事显得不平凡。例如：
That was an insightful remark you made.
That was a perceptive remark you made.
（你说的话很有见地。）
